Guess what? Once again, we are launching a unique App Store Optimization (ASO) feature that you will not find anywhere else! Please meet the “Apple Search Popularity History”. Discover the evolution of any keyword’s popularity over time. All details below.
Along with Search Ads, Apple has recently unveiled English (EN-US, EN-UK & EN-AUS) keywords Search Popularity in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand.
This new indicator has been long awaited by the mobile app industry, as it allows to understand the level of popularity of any given keyword. Basically, the Search Popularity indicates whether a keyword is popular or not in the app store searches.
Needless to say that the Search Popularity is a crucial piece of data to take into account in your keywords research. Indeed, it is important to aim at popular keywords in order to increase your app’s visibility and drive more installs. You obviously want app store users to actually use the keywords that you’re targeting when they make a search.
This is exactly why we always make sure to fetch the exact Apple Search Popularity, as officially given through the Search Ads platform, in order to be as accurate as possible. Actually, AppTweak was the first ASO tool to retrieve this data (October 3, 2016).
Given the importance of this metric, we’ve decided to go further by providing you with the 90-day history of any keyword’s Search Popularity.
The English definition of the word “Popularity” goes as follows: “The state or condition of being liked, admired, or supported by many people.”
“Popularity” is indeed a state, and states or conditions change. While some brands, games, or apps seem to never fade away, they remain a minority.
Trends are constantly evolving. What’s trending and popular today can become totally obsolete the next day. On the opposite, something totally random can quickly escalate to being the new “must-have” or general center of interest.
Also, what’s trendy in a specific country might not be in another. The same logic applies to the languages.
Apps and app downloads are of course not spared by the current trends. App Store users will most likely have different search behaviors over time and be influenced by the trends in their region.
Trendiness also varies according to time and various periods of the year. Shopping and gifts will be trending topics around Christmas time. Vacation and hotel booking will see a peak of interest during summer time. Politics and presidential elections will have various key moments.
It is therefore interesting to observe and track these trends in order to stay up-to-date with the latest tendencies.
This is particularly relevant in order to adapt and optimize your keywords. What you want is to follow and anticipate the current trends in order to maximize your chances of discoverability.
Being able to understand and explain a specific increase or decrease in the amount of impressions or downloads generated by your app is priceless. It will help you improve over time and detect new opportunities.
Great news for you, we’ve now added a 90-day Keywords Search Popularity History on AppTweak. You can now see the evolution of a keyword’s popularity in the searches for the past 3 months. In the future, we will most likely go further back in time.
Note: This feature is currently only available for countries and languages supported by Search Ads, as we use the exact Search Popularity coming from Apple directly (English US, UK and NZ for the USA, the UK, Australia and New Zealand). Once Apple tackles more territories and languages, we will immediately adjust and add them to our tool.
This data is available under any of our plans via our Keyword Tool. Simply go on any app’s ASO report, click on the “Keywords” tab and then add the keyword(s) you want to track in the “Keywords Analysis” table. Then, simply click on the “Top 10” button.
In this case, we took the keyword “spinner” (in the United States). This is the perfect example of this new “Fidget Spinner” craze that everyone talks about.
This new gadget obviously impacts App Store searches, as the Search Popularity History graph indicates. Indeed, store user’s interest has naturally increased and they are probably trying to find mobile app games around this newly famous “spinner” toy.
On April the 6th, the keyword “spinner” had a Search Popularity of 40 in the USA. This score has then clearly increased over time, having one month later, a Search Popularity of 67.
Given that Apple’s Search Popularity scale is relatively narrowed (most keywords’ Search Popularity hovers around 20-60), 67 clearly shows the high popularity of this keyword.
Moreover, an increase of 27 points in one month is quite spectacular. This is exactly the kind of trend that you need to keep track of.
Along with the new Search Popularity History graph, we’ve added a few improvements to our platform, including:
You can now easily view and compare your competitors Downloads Keywords directly from your app’s report.
We made it very easy for you to spy on the keywords bringing the most organic downloads to your competitors, following the same logic used in the “Ranked Keywords” section.
What’s more, you can very easily see which keywords you’re sharing with your competitors via “Shared Keywords”.
You can easily change from competitors by using the drop down as shown below.
After many requests, we’ve added the possibility to select a precise time frame on the “Visibility Score” graph in the “Keywords Monitoring” section.
As a reminder, the Visibility Score (see this article for more details) shows your app’s global ranking performance on the keywords you’ve tracked on AppTweak, in your keywords list.
It helps you to see if you’ve made any progress in terms of visibility over time, in comparison with your competitors.
Enabling you to choose the exact period of time you want to track will help you organize your ASO monitoring job. The point is to make it easier for you to focus on some specific period of time.
The time selector is the same as the one used on other sections. You can choose between: “last 7 days”, “last 30 days”, last 90 days”, “this month”, “last month”, “past 6 months”, “past year” or a “custom range”, on which you can select the exact period you want.
