Games Sub Categories now in App Icon Color Analysis and Category keywords
If you’re working with gaming apps then this one’s for you! We’ve just added the games Sub categories to our App Icon Analysis and into the Category Keywords. The App icon analysis will help better understand what colors are most used in the icons of the top games in a given subcategory. The category keywords will give you insights on the top keywords of the top apps that rank in a subcategory.
App Icon Color Analysis for Games Sub Categories
The idea of this feature is to show you the most popular colors used in apps’ icons of a given category. To calculate the color spectrum of a category, we took the top 50 apps that rank in the category, we put all the icons together and applied a clustering algorithm on the pixels. This allowed us to extract a list of main colors (we put the limit at 12 different colors).
Although this feature already existed on AppTweak for all app categories, for gaming apps, we only had the color spectrum for the category Games. Of course, one spectrum for all games is very broad, therefore we decided to split them into the subcategories. Here are some interesting insights we found:
On iOS, when we compared the color spectrum of Games Arcade and Games Adventure, we found very different results. The colors used in the icons of Arcade games tend to be very bright and flashy, whereas those used for Strategy games are duller and mostly in the black-grey-brown tone. The first set of colors make us think of fun and light games - typical casual games - the latter suggests more mid to hardcore games, that plunge you into a real-life universe.
When we compare the colors of the games’ icon in the Card and Casino category on iOS, we found lots of similar colors. This is mainly due to the fact that many apps are in both categories. Card games like Poker, Blackjack etc. are referenced as both card games and casino games. That said, we do see that there is more gold color in Casino (coins) and more green color in Card (the typical card game table color).
If we do the same exercise on Google Play, the results are even more marked. This is due to the fact that on iOS, a game can choose more than one subcategory, but, on Google, you can only reference your game in one Game category.
Once again, we can see that games in the Casual category use much lighter colors than games in the Strategy category who opt for darker icons.
When we look at the color palettes of Cards vs. Casino on Google, they aren’t so similar as on iOS. This time, the color green is much more present in icons in the Card category, and nearly absent in icons of the top games in the Casino category. Games in the Casino category tend to have a high presence of shades of yellow and orange in their icon, again because these colors are often associated with coins and luck.
Category keywords for Games Sub Categories
The category keywords give you a great insight of the top keywords within your game’s category. To calculate them, we fetch the top apps that rank in a given category, and for each app we check the keywords it ranks on. We then gather the keywords that were most repeated and for which the apps ranked the best.
Once again, this feature was already live on AppTweak for all app categories, but only available for the Games category. This led to a set of very broad and generic keywords linked to gaming, making the results difficult to use.

We, therefore, decided to go one step further and show the category keywords for Games subcategories. Here too, the keywords we got were much more insightful!

Who would have thought that the top category keywords for Word games nearly all have the keyword “word” in them? This explains why “word” has become so competitive.
