Temu emerges as the most downloaded shopping app in the US
On Black Friday, Temu was the most downloaded shopping app in the US both on the App Store and Google Play. Launched globally on 31 August 2022, the Chinese app Temu saw incredible growth in the US market, reaching an impressive 612K downloads in its first month after launch.

Since then, Temu has been incrementally growing its popularity among US consumers, reaching record download numbers in November. The shopping app received a total of 4.7 million downloads in November. This steady and incremental growth led the shopping app to climb to the top charts in the US on both the app stores. Temu ranked #1 across all the US App Store categories from November 12, and led the rankings for two weeks on Google Play starting from November 7.
Shopify’s Shop sees increased downloads in Black Friday week

Shop has experienced the highest growth during the Black Friday week with a 24% increase in downloads. This surge in downloads brings it closer to the Chinese fast-fashion giant Shein.

Data from AppTweak’s AppDNA shows that downloads for fashion apps have decreased by 27% compared to last year. In an economic context of increasing inflation prices, it seems that the US consumers are less inclined to download new fashion apps. However, fashion apps remain the most popular AppDNA within the shopping category with 11M downloads recorded during the Black Friday period in 2022.
Across all AppTweak’s AppDNAs, wholesaler apps are the only one that has seen a growth in downloads compared to last year. This might be due to Temu‘s remarkable growth over the past months (Temu is classified as a wholesaler app in AppTweak’s AppDNA classification model).
