Monthly Downloads per keyword now in new markets

We’ve just released the monthly downloads an app gets from a specific keyword in 4 new markets: the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Spain. If you’re optimising apps in Europe, this feature is a must-have!

Monthly Downloads per keyword - Our Methodology

Over the last months, we’ve been digging into our data to compute an accurate estimate of the number of downloads a keyword brings to an app. Using the data of thousands of apps we’ve collected over the past years, we managed to translate Apple Search Popularity Index into a number of total impressions in a given country. Digging deeper, we could come up with different levels of conversion rates (Search vs. Browse, Brand vs. Generic, etc.) that enabled us to translate those impressions into installs. This has led us to an accurate estimation of the level of downloads a specific keyword brings to your app.

There are three major elements that influence the number of downloads a keyword drives to your app:

  • Keyword Volume: the higher the traffic the keyword drives, the higher its potential in terms of downloads.

  • App Rank on Keyword: of course, apps in top ranks on a word are much more visible and therefore have a higher conversion rate.

  • Brand or Generic Keyword: AppTweak takes into account if a keyword is branded or not when calculating the downloads a keyword brings to an app. If an app is first on its Brand name, the conversion rates will be much higher than if it ranks n°1 on a generic word. Similarly, if an app is 2nd or 3rd on a Branded term, it is less likely to convert than if it was 2nd or 3rd on a generic word.

When we compare Cookie Jam’s top download keywords across 3 EU countries, we find interesting insights. In the UK, keywords with “match 3” seem to work well for the app. In France, we found various combinations of “jeux” on which the game ranks well are driving good traffic to the app. In Germany, users seem to search the game with a lot of typos.

We’ve also added this indicator in the Competition Analysis table. Now, when you compare how your competitors rank against your app on keywords, you can also compare which keywords bring the most downloads to each competitor.

It’s interesting to see which apps are benefit most from competitor brands. For instance, ASOS gets a good share of downloads on the brands 21 Buttons and Shein. Zara also benefits from its visibility on the brand Shein. However, H&M doesn’t get that many downloads from the brand “mango” although it ranks in 2nd position.

Why and how to monitor competitors on the store

We hope you get the most out of these new indicators. We believe that they can really help you understand which keywords are most valuable to your app and also to your competitors.
