Using Stories to find app related keywords
As you’ve probably noticed, we’ve been developing a whole new ASO feature in AppTweak over past months that gives insights on Stories and Featured content. You can now search the stories and apps that were featured on the App Store today tab in any country and over time.
We’ve also added a keyword view where you can see the keywords that a story ranks for. In our previous article, we explain how Apple is giving more and more importance to browse traffic by ranking featured content among search results. This shift has a real impact on your ASO strategy.
This made us think: what about those keywords a story ranks on? How relevant are they? What is their potential in terms of volume? How can we include them in our ASO routine?
Digging through the data, we found that the keywords chosen by Apple to rank a story were actually closely related to the apps featured in that story. These keywords constitute a real source of inspiration to explore new ASO ideas and tactics.
That’s why we decided to make it even easier for you by gathering all the keywords a story in which an app is featured ranks for into one keyword suggestion tool. Confused? Let me say that again to make it clearer.
Basically, for any followed app or competitor on AppTweak, we fetch the stories in which that app was featured in over the last 90 days. We then have a look at the keywords for which that story ranks (or used to rank) over the last 90 days. The result? A nice list of app-related keywords that can really broaden your ASO keyword search. To make things even easier for you, we indicate the volume of the keywords directly in the suggestions. This enables you to immediately focus on truly relevant words that actually drive traffic.
Examples on how to use the Story Keywords Suggestion Tool
As mentioned above, the Story Keywords can be a great source of inspiration for your ASO keyword research. For instance, we had a look at the story keywords of the app Booking.com in the US and found 400 keywords (volume 5 excluded), all related to the travel & hotel industry.

You can also easily compare the Story keywords of you app against your competitors. In the following example, we compared the top volume story keywords found for the app MyFitnessPal vs. Sweat: Kayla.
Story keywords is also a great tool to get inspiration when you’re working on an app’s localization. You can check to which keywords Apple is associating your app in a foreign local language.
If you’re working on a photo editor app that you’re about to launch worldwide, you might want to check the Story keywords of similar apps in the markets your launching in. We had a look at two Photo Editor apps and their Story keywords in Russia and Japan to get photo-related keywords in those languages.
